IS The Earth Flat?THEORY

The Earth Is Flat.

Sounds funny when you read it, doesn’t it? You’d think if we’ve been on earth for this long, we’d know the shape of it. Well, we do. It’s a sphere. Or is it? Have you ever seen it?

This theory is so popular that there is a group named “The Flat Earth Society”, and it dedicates its time to proving itself right (as a collective). Members argue that the horizon is always at eye-level, which they say would not be possible should the earth be round. They also claim that there is no full movie of the earth rotating- which is false.

A video was provided by NASA, published from ‘actual satellites’ including a live video of Earth from the ISS (International Space Station), which orbits our planet 16 times a day.

Let’s look at one side a time: first, spherical earth (or an oblate spheroid to be specific). The oblate spheroid is an ellipsoid of revolution obtained by rotating an ellipse about its shorter axis.

“It is the regular geometric shape that most nearly approximates the shape of the Earth. A spheroid describing the figure of the Earth or other celestial body is called a reference ellipsoid.”- Wikipedia.

Wearily, we can accept a Wikipedia definition of a shape, because why would anybody lie about the shape of something. Next, we have the internet’s definition of ‘The True Shape Of The World,” according to blogs.nature.com “It has already produced the most accurate map ever of the so-called geoid – an Earth-encompassing spirit level and global reference surface. Markedly different from a simple sphere or ellipsoid, the geoid is the mathematically ‘true’ shape of our planet.”

Now, our evidence for a flat earth:

Modern flat Earth societies consist of individuals who promote the erroneous idea that the Earth is flat rather than a sphere. Such groups date from the middle of the 20th century; some adherents are serious and some are not. Those who are serious are often motivated by pseudoscience. -Wikipedia

Modern flat Earth hypotheses originated with the English writer Samuel Rowbotham (1816–1884). Based on conclusions derived from the Bedford Level experiment, Rowbotham published a pamphlet Zetetic Astronomy. He later expanded into a book Earth Not a Globe, proposing the Earth is a flat disc centred at the North Pole and bounded along its southern edge by a wall of ice, Antarctica. Rowbotham further held that the Sun and Moon were 3,000 miles (4,800 km) above Earth and that the “cosmos” was 3,100 miles (5,000 km) above the Earth.
